Ladders are found in levels of the Counter-Strike series for ascending and descending. They are considered parts of the map in the engine, and thus ladders can take the form of non-ladder objects when paired with non-ladder props, such as pipes, ropes, vent doors, street lights, wooden pillars or vines.

Mechanics

GoldSrc

A ladder is composed of a ladder texture: a func_wall or func_illusionary with its render mode set to solid, and a func_ladder that informs the engine where climbable areas exist. Together, they form a visible, climbable ladder within the game.

Players can approach a ladder and brush against it: the character will automatically begin climbing. They can then ascend or descend by pressing the forward or backward movement key.

Climbing ladders produces distinctive climbing sound effects. At times, this may inadvertently reveal a player's position to enemies.

Additionally, while climbing, players' weapon accuracy is significantly reduced since their feet are not planted on solid ground. This makes it extremely difficult for players suspended mid-air on a ladder to counterattack enemies launching surprise attacks from the ground.
