Development History
Counter-Strike
Aztec, notable as one of the earliest large outdoor maps, was designed by Christopher 'Barney' Auty, who also got assisted by Chris 'MacMan' Ashton with textures. It first appeared in Counter-Strike Beta 6.5. Unlike the subsequent build, this release follows the same general layout that Aztec uses from CS 1.1 forward. The map itself offers no indication of which locations are bombsite A or bombsite B. Those on map designations wouldn't be introduced until the 1.6 Aztec redesign.
In version Beta 7.0, the map was changed substantially. One bombsite was relocated into a dedicated zone accessible to terrorists only via a narrow, dim passage, making attacks by that side considerably more difficult and time consuming than in other Aztec versions.
However, in Counter-Strike 1.1, Aztec went back to its original layout, likely to improve balance for terrorists. The 1.1 update also came with a comprehensive visual overhaul that gave the map a very different appearance relative to previous versions. This was the last of the three map builds to be released before CS 1.6.
In Counter-Strike 1.6, Aztec received another major visual overhaul, including alterations to the bridge. In the current 1.6 build, the bombsite to the left of the CT spawn is labeled B, while the site to the right is labeled A. This is visible in the map's own markings and in the place names that appear beneath the radar when 1.6 Aztec is loaded in Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
Textures were greatly enhanced. Stone and grass textures were changed to higher-detail mossy and slightly darker stone. New ambiance sounds can be heard, such as crickets.
Relative to the current 1.6 build, the bombsite markings are inverted: the left site from the CT spawn is A, and the right is B.
Counter-Strike (Xbox)
Aztec is featured in Counter-Strike Xbox and reuses textures from Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. The official factions for this map are the Navy Seals (in jungle uniform) and the Guerrilla Warfare.
Counter-Strike: Source
Visual updates are easily recognized as the water in the river is more realistic. Moreover, the brightness was somewhat reduced as there are more clouds in the sky. In older versions of Source, the sky was darker.
The area from the CT Spawn Zone to the doors leading to Bomb site B was simplified, and the openness of the T spawn zone was changed.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Aside from graphical improvements, the back route that connected between the Terrorist Spawn Zone and the river was removed and brightness was increased. Furthermore, the angle of the ramp at the back was placed in reverse thus allowing players to traverse through the area with ease. A connector from CT Side hall to Bombsite A was added.
In one of the earliest updates to the map, its visually noisy ground stone and moss textures have been replaced with darker, cobblestone-like ground and plainer-looking moss. Additionally, ground fog particles have also been removed.
In a later update, the map was revamped. There is a pathway that connects the back halls and the courtyard. The overpass offers more protection from snipers for the Terrorist team. Additional props have been added to the river and bombsite A for more cover.
The official factions for Aztec are SEAL Team 6 and the Phoenix Connection.
In the November 13, 2017 update, the map was removed from the game files, making it inaccessible in game. The reason for removal was stated to be due to the map being a lesser played map. On the CS GO Blog, developers promised to re-add the map when it is updated.[1]
